Any non smokers here ever date a smoker?
The Frisky — My boyfriend just came back from a semester abroad in Paris — and he came back a smoker. I am not a smoker. Never have been, never will be. Smoking may be a deal-breaker when it comes to dating, but what if your love starts smoking mid-relationship? I couldn’t smoke during high school as I was dancing professionally for an opera company, and by the time I got to college it just didn’t seem like a big deal anymore.
Imagine your perfect significant other. What do they look like? What qualities do you like about them? What are they passionate about? In many relationships, a person’s reaction to a deal breaker can be just as strong as the attractive qualities we feel for another person. For me, that deal breaker is smoking. Whether you vape or have never smoked a cigarette in your life, I think we can all agree that smoking cigarettes is a bit of a turn off to us.

I was 7 years old the first time I visited New York City. I do, however, remember holding my breath while walking around Manhattan. I grew up in a Los Angeles suburb, and no one smoked. No one on the street did. Then I went to a small liberal arts school 90 miles north of New York City. The college was filled with queers, art history majors and brooding, pretentious intellectuals. Needless to say, everyone I met smoked. If you were extra misunderstood as an artist, you rolled your own cigarettes.
It smelled gross. And in the middle of winter, you have to leave your warm bed to smoke outside in the snow.

After several failed relationships, I finally found someone who is all the things you say that a real man should be. The only problem is that he smokes. He is too, but his smoking is the only issue we keep arguing about. He says he is trying to kick the habit for me, but he has failed to do so and it seems he smokes even more after each failed attempt. The other day he told me that he has already started looking for a house for us and that he plans to marry me next year and wants to start a family a year later.
He has been working overtime at his job to make this happen and every month he shows me his bank statement. What should I do? Your advice is much appreciated. Previous research has suggested that adolescent dating is a risk factor for both concurrent and prospective tobacco use. This study extends previous research by examining whether a partner’s smoking status moderated the relationship between dating and adolescent smoking. Participants were 1, 9th and 10th grade students who took part in a longitudinal study investigating the social and emotional contexts of adolescent smoking patterns. Adolescents were recruited into the longitudinal study based on prior smoking history.
Our findings indicated that a change in dating status from not dating to having a partner significantly increased the odds of the adolescent smoking at 15 months but significantly only for those who dated a smoker. This effect was especially pronounced among boys. All boys who dated a smoker smoked themselves. Among adolescents who smoked at 15 months, there was also a strong protective effect among boys for dating a nonsmoker, compared with either those who did not have partners or those with smoking partners; boys with nonsmoking partners smoked significantly less than those with partners who smoked or those without partners.
These results highlight the importance of considering the smoking status of the romantic partner in the smoking—dating relationship in adolescents. Prior cross-sectional findings have found a positive association between dating and smoking behavior Bynner, ; Martin et al. Longitudinal studies have found that having a boyfriend or a girlfriend is associated with higher odds of subsequent smoking uptake McNeill et al.
Additionally, Fidler, West, Jarvis, and Wardle found that dating at the age of 11—12 years was associated with smoking uptake for each of the following 4 years.

Hello, I’m not sure if I’m posting this to the right place and if it isn’t appropriate I understand. I’m struggling with how to broach the subject with my boyfriend around his return to smoking and not telling me about it.
I don’t have proof as I haven’t caught him and I haven’t tried to catch him because I could be wrong. But his clothes have smelt like smoke, his car smells like smoke, and he’s waking up early and going outside for 10 minutes before I get up and rushes into the shower if he hears me getting up. I asked him once why he was outside and I got up early to go bathroom and he said he was super hot and needed to call off outside, which is legitimate as he’s always done this, but it’s never been a daily thing till now.
